EXCLUSIVE: OMAR HAMMAMI REVEALS WHY SHABAB WANTS TO KILL HIM

PANEL: INFILTRATION AND SURVEILLANCE

J.M. Berger took part in a panel at the New America Foundation with Pulitzer Prize winners Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman of the Associated Press to discuss the effects and effectiveness of infiltration and surveillance tactics against homegrown extremists.

Panel: Infiltration and surveillance

For this event, J.M. Berger wrote a 30-page report on the FBI's infiltration of the white supremacist movement during the 1990s, which includes extensive detail on undercover operations and how Timothy McVeigh crossed the investigation's path.

FROM INSPIRE TO ABBOTTABAD

Osama bin Laden's letters and files released this week helped flesh out a picture of how Al Qaeda uses the Internet, while two new issues of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's English-language Inspire magazine were released. One of the issues was created prior to the September 2011 death of American Al Qaeda members Anwar Awlaki and Samir Khan. The other was produced after.

OKC BOMBING ANNIVERSARY

An FBI undercover program known as PATCON spent more than two years collecting intelligence on the Patriot movement, without producing a single conviction. Timothy McVeigh was in contact with members of the targeted groups at the time of the investigation, but those links escaped notice, even after the Oklahoma City bombing.

PATCON will be examined in more detail in a forthcoming report by J.M. Berger for the New America Foundation, which looks at the double-edged sword of infiltration techniques and raises questions about how undercover agents and informants should be used in light of current controversies.

AL QAEDA'S NEW YORK "SCARE"

An Al Qaeda enthusiast posted a picture of New York City with the phrase "Al Qaeda: Coming Soon Again in New York" to the Ansar Al-Mujahideen Arabic forum, which is where terrorist trolls have been hanging out while their elite forums are offline. But you can table your alarm.

AMERICAN JIHADI OMAR HAMMAMI HIDES OUT WITH FRIEND AFTER RIFT WITH AL SHABAB

American Omar Hammami, lately of the Al Shabab affiliate of Al Qaeda in Somalia, has released an "urgent" message online saying he is afraid for his life after a split with the group. "To whomever it may reach from the Muslims... I record this message today because I fear my life may be endangered by [Al Shabab] because of some differences that occurred regarding matters of the Sharia and of strategy."

Hammami appeared to be hiding out at the home of fellow American Shabab member Cabdulaahi Ahmed Faarax, according to an image analysis by INTELWIRE.

THE BOY WHO CRIED 'LONE WOLF'

Friday's arrest of a would-be suicide bomber in Washington, D.C. led to a fresh paroxysm of analysis in the media on the ominous threat of lone wolf terrorism on U.S. soil.

The problem is that Amine El-Khalifi wasn't alone. He was in contact with men he believed were part of Al Qaeda, and those men handed him a complete (but inert) suicide vest and an automatic weapon to carry out his attack. The fact those men were FBI undercover agents is beside the point. If someone claiming to work for Al Qaeda hands you a fully assembled bomb for your attack, you're not a lone wolf.

Al Shabab supporters rally in Mogadishu to celebrate merger with Al Qaeda

Hundreds of Somalis gathered on the outskirts of Mogadishu on Feb. 13 to celebrate the union of al Qaeda with its Somali cousin, the insurgent-terrorist group al-Shabab. But the mainstream media hasn't quite figured out what to make of the news, first announced last week, that the two groups had officially merged.

Many reporters were already accustomed to thinking of them as the same group. Others grasped at straws to fit the news into the "al Qaeda is losing" narrative -- dominant ever since Osama bin Laden was killed last May.

They might have done better with a simple headline: "Dozens of Americans Join al Qaeda."

INTERVIEW WITH AN ONLINE JIHADIST

Terrorist use of the Internet is a hot topic these days, but it's often discussed in very broad terms, as if the Internet itself is the story, rather than the people who use it. Abu Suleiman Al Nasser is the alias used by one of the self-professed cyber-jihadists who frequent online message boards used by Islamist terrorists and Al Qaeda sympathizers. He spoke with INTELWIRE about what he does and why.

MONSTERS AND CHILDREN: HOW POLITICIANS TALK ABOUT MUSLIMS AND ISLAM

The power centers in American politics, both left and right, have grown increasingly counterproductive in their attitudes toward Muslim Americans. On the right, Muslims are treated largely as monsters, a seething mass of people who do not share American values and could, at any moment, establish a Taliban-style theocracy right here in the United States. On the left, Muslims are treated as children who cannot be left to their own devices, who must be carefully tutored in proper behavior but not made to feel like they are singled out.

AWLAKI'S CONSTANTS: AN ENDURING WORK

A U.S. drone killed Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaqi on Sept. 30, 2011, but his greatest contribution to Al Qaeda's cause lives on. Awlaki's six-hour audio lecture "Constants on the Path of Jihad" may be the single most influential work of jihadist incitement in the English language.

Awlaki's translation of "Constants" into English has become a classic of radicalization in the West, not just because of Awlaki's formidable language skills, but also his creative interpretation of the original text with expanded religious stories and real-life examples.
